Her Campus
Staff Writer
In the Fall of 2020, during my senior year at George Mason University while earning my degree in Marketing I wanted to increase my proficiency in my writing skills. To add on, with my marketing degree I wanted to utilize my academic abilities in the journalism field once I graduated. During such a time I took advantage of the external and internal sources I held while attending college. That is why I decided to join Her Campus, an online publication available in universities with multiple chapters around the world. As a staff writer, it gave me the opportunity to write and learn about different aspects of journalism while also meeting fellow members. Unfortunately, during the time the world was suffering due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus, also known as COVID-19. Everything was virtual which made conferences virtual, but it was still an amazing experience. Being on lockdown and having to stay in the house 24 hours a day was mentally draining, but having the opportunity to write and talk to associates apart of Her Campus was great! As a member, I wrote 14 articles about a plethora of topics in different beats. To make it clear beats is a term used in the journalism field pertaining to the topic a journalist is covering. I had the luxury of choosing the topic I wanted to write about: entertainment, culture, and news. It was an amazing experience that has developed my skills giving me an increased set of skills I needed to be able to adapt and apply to journalism graduate school programs. If I can join Her Campus again I would do so without hesitation and just to be clear you don’t have to have a major in Communications. A sum of members is in different departments, such as me who majored in Marketing which is part of the business division!
