Review:
What the hell did I watch?
Don’t Look Up is a 2021 black comedy science fiction Netflix film based on an incoming comet that will destroy the entire earth planet whipping out humanity. It has an all-star cast with Leonardo DiCaprio starting as astronomy professor, Dr. Randall Mindy. Alongside Jennifer Lawrence his student, Kate Dibiasky. The film follows the two while they try to inform the government and society that the world will be coming to an end if the comet is not destroyed. But, due to corrupt governors such as the president, played by Meryl Streep, the disastrous event seems to be the last thing on their minds.
I watched this film as I was getting my hair done 😂 because sitting in a chair for over five hours without any breaks can make a person restless. After finishing a previous show, I
decided to watch the film to kill time without any guarantee I would like the film. However, I very much loved this film from the beginning to the end. It was not because it sustained an all-star cast, but because the storyline was intriguing and matched society, the movie created its society.
Are you not understanding what I mean? The movie starred musicians like Ariana Grande and Kid Cudi as musicians however in the film they didn’t possess their real-life stage names. Instead, they were given different names and separate personalities that resonated with the movie! The acting was hilarious because Grande was an airhead in the film and Cudi had one scene acting foolish. Apart from that, they have Tyler Perry and Cate Blanchett as co-hosts of a hit show in which they had excellent chemistry. At points, I was thinking they could pull off as anchors, but then I remember that is why they are established, actors and actresses.
Then we get into the main point of the film which focuses on the desaturation of earth and the fact the planet along with everyone inside of it will die. Watching movies like this, The Day After Tomorrow, 2012, and more make me believe this will happen one day. Scientists constantly warn society and those that govern our society of such, but we don’t take it seriously. However, in this film, the personality of Janie Orlean, The President of the United States of America, is horrifying and downright very much present in real life. She could have cared less about the citizens who elected her, but once the scandal came, she decided to use the topic of the comet to gather votes. That is true in society and almost every politician in America and possibly other countries commits such. They promise to create policies that will benefit everyone of every social class but then get amnesia once in office. It’s disgusting and regardless of if you are a Democrat or Republican, it doesn’t matter because both consist of people that are just like President Janie Orlean. I knew the fairytale
of her believing in the destruction of the comet was all bullsh*t and when an opportunity presented itself, she would stop the forces created to save the planet. Guess what? She did just that when a possible business plan came along by a billionaire, Peter Isherwell, who believed the comet would benefit humans and create jobs and money for society. It was going to make him richer which is a saying in this world of the rich getting richer. When I saw this scene, I was pissed because society was extremely close to being saved and then at the smell of money everything was aborted. When Peter began to speak about his plans, I thought, “How the f*ck will the comet be a necessity to society if everyone is dead 🙄?”
As for Dr. Randall Mindy and Kate Dibiasky’s characters, I liked them because they couldn’t be any more different, but equally smart. I did like Kate because she was honest from the beginning and that is the biggest reason, she was arrested so many times and gave up on humanity. She completed every step she could to save the planet and even stood up to the politicians that people loved so much but were shady in the background. In the end, I am glad she found love and contentment. The part I hated most was when she lost her cool on TV and people started to write articles, blogs, and make memes of her. Her boyfriend broke up with her through an article and profited from it conducting interviews and telling false
narratives about their lives. This is the real world we see plenty of people trying to seek their five minutes of fame and lie about scenarios relating to celebrities. It is currently happening with the Will Smith controversy after he slapped Chris Rock on stage 😦 as more people that haven’t been relevant come out and speak on Smith.
But, back to the movie as for Dr. Randall Mindy, I liked him, but he disappointed me. I knew the good looks and genius traits he possessed would benefit him in the media but affect him in the long run. He lost himself and his path due to the fame he was receiving. If you know me, I am 100% against infidelity, and when he began to cheat on his wife with Blanchett’s character, I completely lost respect for him. Their marriage seemed happy, not perfect, but they seemed happy. He didn’t care when his wife confronted him to make him choose to stay with his mistress or leave with her. Instead, he decided to stay with his present mistress who disrespected his wife. I wanted to reach through my phone and beat his a** during the whole scene. However, in the end, he comes to his senses when he notices those, he has
been working with are no good and greedy going on a complete and utter horrific rant live on TV. That results in him being abandoned and kicked out of the administration. Doesn’t this sound a lot like many political teams because when a person gets kicked out, they are truly alone and seeking importance hard to find?
But, as for Mindy luckily for him, the ones he left behind were truly there for him when he returns home again.
The movie was such a replica of real-life because in the movie you have the “Just Look Up” squad of people that believe in the comet which was created by Mindy and Dibiasky’s. Then the other group of people that don’t believe the comet exists or it will create jobs 😡 that call themselves "Don’t Look Up" led by President Janie Orlean, her administration, and Peter Isherwell.
I do like the side characters like Dr. Teddy Oglethorpe, played by Rob Morgan, and Jonah Hill as Jason Orlean, the president’s son. They both were significant to the story, and I enjoyed them very much in the movie.
People consider this a “woke” film, but it is a scientific film that gives insight into the
disasters this world can face. In real life, we don’t take topics such as climate change seriously and scientists frequently warn about the issues this planet and humanity can face if that continues. I am no scientist and as a student, I was never a great student in science, but I believe those who are experts especially if there is a large margin of them tell the same narrative. The thing is this can happen and if people believe it cannot they should think back to 2020 when the pandemic began, and society was not expecting it 🤷🏾♀️.
I do like that this movie did not give off fairy tales and the movie ended with the destruction of the planet with Mindy his family and friends enjoying their last moment together. In the end, the “Don’t Look Up” crowd noticed everything was true and found out too late. Of course, I didn’t want this to happen, but it was real and if people choose not to believe and words like extinction are said I would take things seriously. I was not surprised in the least when in the end the rich were able to survive, including the president, going to another planet over 20,000 years later. It was amazing to see them go on a planet without friendly animals as the president learned too late 😂.
I would have liked to see the comet explained a little bit more and the movie was kind of rushed at certain points in time. I do like it more when a cast is more authentic introducing
new actresses and actors. All-star cast films seem to lack a specific need in movies. However, this movie was great and that is why I gave it a 4.75 rating because I know critics were hard and not that pleasant, but I loved it and Leonardo DiCaprio’s acting was amazing specifically the voice change. If you don’t have Netflix, I suggest you borrow someone else’s to watch this film!
