Review:

Before diving into a review of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man has always been one of my top 5 favorite Marvel Comics superheroes. Since childhood, I could remember having the Spider-Man-themed comforter set on my bed. Even having graphic tees consisting of Spider-Man on my shirts, which I still purchase 🤪. As a baby born in 1998, I grew up on the Spider-Man movies trilogy staring Tobey Maguire whom I loved and adored playing such a role. Plus, a favorite childhood actress of mine played in the movie, Kristen Dunst, which made it even better. Before that apart from cartoons that is the first live-action version of Spider-Man I had seen, and I fell in love with the hero even more. Not because of his powers, I suffer from Arachnophobia which makes me terrified of spiders and webs, but his general character, Peter Parker. An intelligent high school student who doesn’t fit in with the “popular kids” and is occasionally bullied. He was a copycat of every pre-teen and teens day to day life which made me connect with him though I was younger. Now being 23 years old is difficult for me to not compare Sony’s reboots of the Spider-Man films to each other. After

Tobey Maguire, it was Andrew Garfield, and currently, it is Tom Holland. When I say I am tough on the Spider-Man movies after Maguire's performance that might be an understatement. I try not to be, but it is kind of hard to not look at reboots and have no biases at all.

Before this week, I have never watched the reboot of Spider-Man starring Tom Holland. It was something I put off for so long, but due to Spider-Man: No Way Home coming out this Friday on December 15 I decided to watch it. My younger brother keeps begging me to because he wants me to go to the movies with him to see the upcoming new film. I watched it and I can say it is different from the previous Spider-Man films, but it was great! Holland outdid himself and as my uncle says “embodied the character” because unlike Garfield and Maguire, Holland looks like a 15-year-old teenager. I was kind of thrown off because you wouldn’t know much about where this film starts if you haven’t watched Captain America: Civil War. Unlike the others, it doesn’t show when Spider-Man is bit or when his Uncle Ben 😢. Though I did watch and know from what point the movie was starting from plus introducing the new Spider-Man, I wish that would have been in there. I am not going to hold a grudge over it because it was still good and of course Tony Stark being present was even better!

The characters were great with Vulture who is played by Beetlejuice star Michael Keaton. He was great in the movie as a villain which isn’t surprising at all. As for his character, I kind of understand his drive to why he was doing what he was doing. He was in comparison to a drug dealer, but selling weapons built from equipment he stole that is from other planets 🤣. He was trying to make a better living for his family, but that is not the route to go at all. Not to mention you are giving weapons to criminals that are going to hurt others who were struggling just as much as he was before his “business venture.” Then there were side characters like Ned, Peter’s best friend whom I adored, but annoyed me once he found out Peter was Spider-Man. I understand secrets are hard to keep, but he was pushing my buttons as a viewer when asking constant questions and exposing that Peter knew Spider-Man. He was a huge help in Peter’s success in stopping Vulture. Of course, there were more side characters like Michelle Jones whom many thoughts were Mary Jane, more so known as MJ, and crucified Zendaya about it. I understand people don’t like change especially about a well know character like MJ who was known for her red hair. I am the same way which I think is noticeable from the beginning of this review! But, I understand the point because there is not much inclusion within the comic world in general. She played the character well and now I see why she is so good in the hit HBO show, Euphoria. I did find her odd, and it was shocking that she had little to no scenes because when the movie was marketed in 2017 it seemed like she had a bigger part. Of course, you have Flash who is the complete opposite of the other Flash characters from previous movies in appearance! Like I said the actors in this movie all look like teenagers compared to the others which was a great quality of the movie. The one thing I am surprised about as well is the love aspect with the character Liz whom Peter had a crush on. It wasn’t explored much which didn’t affect the story except the fact that her father was the villain 😳. Unlike the other movies where romance was a huge theme this one had little to no scenes, Liz and Peter didn’t even kiss 🙃!!

I did like the sequence of the story including the action and Peters suit abilities which was different. I am happy about the fact that this Spider-Man is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I am enjoying Spider-Man within the other Marvel films with more still to come. The fact that this movie held a message which is though someone might be young they are

just as valuable was a fantastic attribute. Not to mention it held a modern-day tone to the film with Peter interacting and finding ways to help society even pointing out directions. To add on, the visuals were amazing it seemed like as a viewer they were real with the bright colors and presence within sequences. I would have wanted it to possibly be longer and explore more within the storyline, but I was satisfied with what was given which is why I scored it a 4 out of 5.

To end Tom Holland is the new Spider-Man and he was excellent as such a character! He has

the voice, body type, and face, which surprised me. I might have given him a hard time at first, but now he is on my radar. I am going to watch the new movie Spider-Man: Far from Home tomorrow before Saturday when I go to watch the new sequel! Looking forward to it and I will have a review up for that.

Watch Spider-Man: Homecoming and give Tom Holland a chance you will not be disappointed and can trust my opinion!
