Review:

I came upon Twisted Hate by Ana Huang through the bookstagram account lcsbookstagram. Usually, I read any book recommendation made by Leena and Logan or other prominent bookstagram accounts as long as I find interest within the descriptions of the books. When I read the description of this book on Amazon, I knew I needed to read the book right away. I usually find interest in enemies-to-lovers tropes and the fact that the male main character was Chinese American was a great factor. This is the first book I have read by Ana Huang, and she didn’t disappoint me at all. I have been in the biggest book slump of my life since January. Unfortunately, at the beginning of the month in January, my grandfather passed which was hard to accept because he was the only grandparent that I have ever had in my life. All three of my other parents passed away before I was born and not to mention his death was the first loss I have experienced since I don’t possess a huge family. It hit me hard and my reading for the whole month of January and early February was affected. But, I found reading does hope and I have officially become a frequent book reader again sobering up from my book slump. Not to say during the process of reading this novel I did not think about ending my reading before I finished. I did frequently with this book being 500+ pages and felt like it was too long, However, once I started to get into the grove of the book and see the relationship develop between the two main characters I was intrigued.

As for the book, Twisted Hate is part of the Twisted series. This particular book follows Josh Chen a doctor in the final year of completing his residency and Jules Ambrose an inspiring attorney currently in law school and running away from her dark past. However, Josh and Jules hate each other with a capital H. Unfortunately, Jules is best friends with Josh’s sister Ava since they were roommates in college. Josh believes Jules is bad news and doesn’t have positive intentions and Jules believes Josh is cocky with a huge judgmental head. However, through all the arguing and issues they have one thing in common. They are heavily

attracted to each other. They both know they are good in bed and decide to share their skills one night after an argument. They do and once that comes, they decide to make a pact to have an enemy with benefits relationship which means all s*x no feelings 🤷🏾‍♀️. But, they both weren’t ready for the pact to be broken and their past to be explored.

When this book started, I was able to explore and see the attraction between both Jules and Josh from the beginning. Unlike most readers, I didn’t read the first two previous books, Twisted Love and Twisted Games. I decided to just start with Twisted Hate after finding out it can be read as a standalone novel. I don’t regret it though I did receive many spoilers while reading this book about the previous two books’ characters and their relationships. They were bickering since the beginning of the book and arguing over the dumbest things. I did like that Jules stood up for herself against Josh though she was insecure on the inside from his words at points in time. Their chemistry was great throughout the book staying intact even when they were running away from it. They were both hilarious and truly deserved each other because a possible different lover couldn’t handle either of their personalities. But, while having the relationship they kept it a secret through Jules living with her best friend Stella. To me, they had no real reason to hide their relationship because they were a too consensual adult. Apart from that, I understand because Jules was Josh’s sister’s best friend and they have hated each other for years.

The aspect of the book I loved the most about this book was the fact that Josh showed emotion. When he lost a patient, he cried for the patient who was just a young teenager. He explored ways in which being a doctor is not easy and can affect a doctor mentally. I used to

watch Grey’s Anatomy and I remember Meredith Grey on the first episode which was her first day witnessed a patient having a seizure which causes her to then throw up. Josh was very much into his residency and still suffered mentally every day. Not to mention as a reader we see him become emotional when talking to his psychopath of a father who he thought changed. Also, rekindling his relationship with his best friend Alex who is in a relationship with his sister. More when he is dealing with heartache during his breakup with Jules. He even became emotional while listening to Jules transcribe her past to him due to some similarities. Many men feel like they don’t need to be emotional and withhold their emotions which affects them very much. It is suspected that is the reason men have a high s**cidal rate which I believe as well. Personally, this is the first time I have read a book with an Asian American male main character. I love to see diversity in books and witnessing it in this book was amazing. Also, Josh often brought up his heritage though people often get upset about that to me it is necessary. His character was amazing, and, in the end, I was happy to see him happy with Jules. Not to mention I loved his nickname for her: Red.

Now Jules. I knew she was hiding something before the book even went into that route which was her past as a thief. When she reminisced about her past, I became emotional because I know people whose mothers were jealous of them and treated them like sh*t. Not to mention when her mother didn’t believe her when it came to her stepfather and instead kicked her out, I was disgusted. What kind of mother does that? I have witnessed through different platforms in the real world putting their significant others in front of their children and it is the worst. That child didn’t ask to be brought into this world. Apart from that her criminal partner, Max, was more of a nuisance than a villain. He was just annoying, and I hate when people blackmail and blame others for the sorry excuse that has become of their life. When he told her to steal the painting Jules was dumb in not getting help from Josh in the first place. Then I understood because she didn’t want to endure the judgment from Josh which he was known for, and Alex pointed it out. But, I can say I liked her plan and when she received the painting back I was glad Max was screwed. When he was k*lled I didn’t feel bad for him for all of the things he had done. Like Josh, I was glad Jules received happiness at the end after obstacles that almost ruined her relationship with Josh. She even passed the bar which was an exciting moment I was glad to witness.

I can say the book wasn’t perfect which is fine because no book is perfect 😉. The reason it

didn’t get a five-star was because I felt like at times there were fillers instead of real reasons the scenes needed to happen. Like when Josh beat up Max to me it was unbelievable because reading Josh’s character, I was expectant of it. Not to mention I would think Alex would get someone to do it instead. To add on, the s*x scenes present some were hot and others were not 🙃. They just seemed cringe at times, and I couldn’t read through the full scene. Maybe it is just me and I am being picky. Then certain s*x scenes were unnecessary or rushed which was a turn-off because Josh and Jules’s chemistry was enough to make the book great!

I am excited for the next book, Twisted Lies which will center around Christian and Stella. I wish I knew someone like him that would lower the rent. I live in Washington, DC, and the

way Huang talked about the cost of living here was 👌🏾. It is literally out of control here and many people that work here don’t live here. However, about the book, I wouldn’t change anything about it because it was wonderful overall! I loved both characters and am hoping to see them in future installments of the Twisted series which I am sure I will. Great work Ana Huang 😍!
